Twice a year, Travis Weisbrod loads a group of men from St. Christopher's into vans and drives them a couple of hours north to Ouachita State Park. They mountain bike. They disc golf. They get into nature and move their bodies and breathe fresh air. The clinical team comes along and groups happen. But the setting is different. The social dynamic is different. The guys who have been drifting toward checked-out get pulled back into the cohort.

Travis, St. Christopher's Wellness Coordinator and a program alumnus since 2011, describes the logic plainly: "We do treatment. We just move the spot."

That sentence applies to families too. The most useful thing you can do with someone in early recovery is not always the most recovery-adjacent thing. Shared experience, ordinary activity, and the texture of a normal afternoon together are clinically meaningful even when they look like nothing more than a regular Sunday.

#### **What You Do Together Matters More Than Whether It’s Recovery Related**

A 2023 study on [the role of social context in addiction etiology and recovery](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10528354/) found that non-drug-using social peers play a measurably protective role in recovery outcomes, and that the nature of social interaction determines whether social context functions as a risk factor or a protective factor. Shared activity with people who are not using is not just pleasant. It is one of the mechanisms through which recovery takes root.

A 2024 review on[integrating physical activity into substance use disorder recovery](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11201577/) found that structured physical activity in recovery was associated with reduced cravings, decreased frequency and amount of use, and improved quality of life outcomes. The same review noted that physical activity is most effective when incorporated into the relational and social fabric of treatment rather than delivered in isolation.

Travis puts the underlying principle this way: "Your physical health and your mental health can't really be separated. As one goes, the other will typically go."

That same principle applies to how families spend time together. You are not obligated to make every interaction therapeutic. The ordinary ones are doing more than they look like.

#### **10 Things to Do With Someone Who's Newly Sober**

---

**1. Cook a meal together.**

Not a recovery metaphor. Just something that requires both of you to pay attention to something other than the conversation you are both nervous about having. Cooking together puts two people in proximity without the pressure of direct eye contact and produces a concrete shared outcome. The conversation that happens while chopping vegetables is usually more honest than the one you planned.

---

**2. Go to a live sporting event.**

Structured, shared attention on something external is underrated. A game gives you two hours of guaranteed common reference, a built-in emotional arc, and something to talk about afterward that has nothing to do with how he is doing. Tailgates and bar-heavy environments are worth navigating thoughtfully, but a stadium seat works fine.

---

**3. Start a fitness goal together.**

A 5K. A gym routine. A cycling habit. The goal is a shared commitment to something that measures progress in a way that neither of you can argue with. Travis watched men who came into St. Christopher's resistant to treatment begin to trust the process when they could feel themselves getting stronger. The same thing happens with families. Concrete shared progress changes the relational texture.

---

**4. Take a day trip somewhere neither of you has been.**

New environments do something cool: they make both people equally unfamiliar, which levels the dynamic. Nobody is at home, nobody is visiting. A two-hour drive, a town you've never had lunch in, and nowhere particular to be until dinner. The[addiction recovery group activities](https://www.addictionwellness.com/blogs/addiction-recovery-group-activities/) that St. Christopher's runs inside the program for exactly this reason: location changes the social dynamic in ways that static settings cannot.

---

**5. Watch a series together over time.**

This one is about sustained shared reference. Picking a show and watching it across several visits or calls gives you something continuous to talk about that is low-stakes, funny, and entirely unrelated to addiction.

---

**6. Do something that requires both of you to learn.**

A cooking class. A paddleboarding lesson. A pottery session. Shared incompetence is bonding. Two people who are both slightly bad at something new do not have room for the dynamic where one person is being assessed and the other is doing the assessing.

---

**7. Go to a farmers market or outdoor fair.**

Unstructured, low-commitment public activity with an easy exit if the energy goes sideways. You walk around. You buy things (or window shop). These settings are low-pressure enough that real conversation tends to emerge from them rather than being forced through them.

---

**8. Work on something physical together.**

A home project. A car. A garden bed. Shared manual work is one of the oldest forms of male bonding and one of the least discussed in recovery literature. The research on physical activity in recovery documents the cognitive and emotional benefits of moving the body. Doing that alongside someone else adds a social layer that amplifies those effects.

---

**9. Volunteer together for something he cares about.**

This works for a specific clinical reason. Research [systematizing peer recovery support services](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12104978/) identifies encouraging substance-free social engagement and community connection as a formally recognized recovery support mechanism, distinct from direct clinical intervention. Doing something for other people together shifts the relational frame from monitoring to participating. He stops being the project. You stop being the supervisor. Both of you are oriented toward something outside the relationship.

---

**10. Just drive somewhere without a destination.**

This is the lowest-commitment item on the list and frequently the most useful. A drive gives you side-by-side proximity, a reason to be together that requires no explanation, and no agenda. The conversations that happen in a moving car without eye contact and without a planned endpoint are often the ones that could not happen any other way.

---

#### **What These Have in Common**

None of them are about recovery but all of them support it.

[St. Christopher's family program](https://www.addictionwellness.com/family-program/), led by Micha Scholes-Matherne, LCSW, covers the full relational picture of what families can do at each stage of treatment to strengthen the relationship while his clinical work continues. The family program runs alongside residential treatment, not separate from it, which means what you are doing together on the outside connects to what he is working on inside the program.

Call St. Christopher's at 225-314-8567 if you want to talk through the family program directly or have questions about staying connected during his treatment. Someone answers around the clock.
